Samuel Malley was born in Carmunnock, near Glasgow, Scotland in 1873. He was living in Vernon, British Columbia and employed as a carpenter when he joined the 102nd Battalion CEF there in February 1916. He was initially transferred to the 67th Pioneer Battalion and proceeded to France with them, but was later transferred to the 124th Pioneer Battalion with whom he served until being discharged
